Environment is a broad-ranging, multi-disciplinary subject, a comprehensive information system on environment would necessarily involve effective participation of concerned institutions/ organisations in the country that are actively engaged in work relating to different subject areas of environment.
The Environmental Information System is acronymed as ENVIS and was implemented by the Ministry of Environment & Forests as a plan scheme for environmental information collection, collation, storage, retrieval and dissemination to policy planners, decision makers, scientists, environmentalists, researchers, academicians and other stakeholders all over the country. There are 27 institutional centres, 14 NGO centres, and 27 State Government centres totalling 68 ENVIS Centres all over the country and are subject specific.
One such centre is established in CSIR-IICT in the year 2003 and is dedicated to disseminate information about "Bioinformatics - Vector Control". The main objective of the centre is to collect, collate and disseminate the information on integrated mosquito control approaches and measures to be taken by the community to over come the menace etc., The Information system that is applied to mitigate the mosquito problem is the integral part of the dissemination of the centre. As all are aware community participation will reduce the significant percentage of the mortality and the role community in this subject is highlighted in the ENVIS centre. This is first of its kind to create awareness on the dreaded diseases in India.
This "ENVIS" centre has been recognised as one of the best centres and awarded "A" Grade for the last two consecutive years by the Ministry of Environment and Forest Government of India.
